Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress After Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
